How to find inner peace

A long time ago, before we got married -- while we were still chewing over the whole extraordinary concept -- JoAnn and I made an important discovery. We discovered that while we are very different in a lot of ways, we both value inner peace, finding inner peace.

We were visiting an old friend who happens to be a clinical psychologist. Our psychologist friend had each of us write down our priorities in life -- and it turned out that while JoAnn, for example, is very practical, and good at figures – which I’m not -- both of us put inner peace at the top of our list.

We think back to that little event in our lives once in awhile and say to ourselves something like this: "I wonder if it's because both of us put so much value in inner peace that we have been able to deal with our challenges and difficulties and keep our relationship growing."

Happiness is inner peace

There’ll be a change in the masthead banner of my blog soon. The tagline used to say, "Finding happiness and peace in troubled times." But the new tagline will say -- with a bit more simplicity and directness -- "Happiness is inner peace."

I can only speak for myself, of course. But the older I get, the more I realize the truth of these four little words.

If I am at peace with myself and my life, I'm happy. It's as simple as that. If for some reason I stop being at peace -- even for a few moments – happiness begins leaking away in a hurry.

How to find inner peace?

How do we find inner peace?

Do you have to go somewhere geographically in order to find it? No. I used to think you did. I was sure of it. I traveled the world in search of it.

Do you have to read a particular book, or go to a particular workshop, or meet just the right mentor? No. You don't. All these things can be helpful, of course.

But the truth is that all you have to do is to be still, truly still, just for a moment. Immediately you do this, your mind stops -- it has no choice -- and you begin to participate in a miracle.

Finding peace at last

All of a sudden, the difficulty and stress and strain that you may have known, for a day, for a week, perhaps for a lifetime, simply dissolves. It's as if it doesn't exist anymore.

You find yourself surrounded immediately by the magic of your true home, the home of being, the home of love, the home of God.

Is it is impossible to understand mentally what stillness is, or what being is. But more and more, I find, that doesn't matter. What's important is that it can be experienced. We can find a connection with our own inner being that nothing can shake or destroy.

Perhaps that's not entirely true. We can be shaken. In this very rigorous process of selling our house in Loveland and then finding a suitable townhome in Denver – for example -- I have been shaken many times.

Yet paradoxically... as we persist… we realize that our being is not shaken at all. Quite calm and untroubled by anything that is transpiring …

You can never lose yourself

Because here's the thing. The stillness of which I am speaking will never leave you. And the reason for this is simple. It is what you are. The stillness that you feel when you open your heart and mind to it is your own stillness. It isn’t coming to you from some far-off deity or another…

It's the stillness of your own being and it will never leave you. In the midst of a chaotic, complex and dangerous world, this is one thing of which you may be very sure:

You can never lose who you truly are.

Happiness is inner peace. Nice headline.
Well i think true happiness is much more than inner peace. though inner peace is the base on which true happiness stands.

True Happiness is when you go beyond inner peace and touch life of others and are able to make changes which go beyond the surface. It is difficult to see these on the surface. But you will know when you have touched someone’s life.

As you say inner peace provides a foundation but of course it rightly expands and reaches out to bless the lives of others in ways that are not always obvious on the surface — but they are meaningful. You are so right saying happiness is inner peace. What happens when we are happy? There is quietness, and the mind does not produce many thoughts, as it usually does.

In the state of inner peace, there are no thoughts, or just a few. There are no worries and no anxieties, and therefore there is happiness.

Inner peace and happiness are deeply connected, which means that the more we learn to quieten the mind, the more inner peace and happiness we experience.

Inner peace and happiness can be experienced wherever one is. One can work, walk, read or interact with other people, and experience inner peace and happiness at the same time. It is all a matter of inner training and change of attitude.

Hmmmm, inner peace without thought? I believe in inner peace as well but I’m confused about inner peace without thought. If you possess inner peace what does it matter whether you have thoughts or not? Inner peace is your inner environment. If your inner environment is at rest than you should be happy with thoughts also.

Some make it seem that thoughts are bad but they to me are a reflection of your inner environment. If you are truely at peace, your thoughts and actions will reflect that. I understand your thoughtless state concept but that is a thought also. Bad thinking reflects lack of inner peace. Correct thinking reflects inner peace, joy and happiness.

Rick, thank you for your very fine comment. I agree with you 100 per cent. I think I must have changed a bit since I wrote that post:-) Change can happen, can’t it? I can’t exactly remember what was going on in me when I wrote that post, but what is going on with me now is this. An increasing recognition that thoughts come and go (sometimes ‘good’ sometimes ‘bad’) and it doesn’t change who I am at all. Thanks again for sharing.

I think it is beautiful that your shared value of Inner Peace has helped the two of you. I think it peace can be best understood as a feeling that is okay. I believe while we cannot know the experience of others we can all relate because we all have feelings as we go through the experiences.

This post really resonated with me, especially when you talk about how you cannot lose your ‘true self’. After a serious illness and some intense years of seeking, I have come to see peace or stillness or silence (we can call it many names!) as what I truly am.

Wonderful post. To me, finding inner peace is very important. In fact, every day in the morning I connect with my core self through Yoga or meditation or EFT. I also write down everything that I am thankful for in a Note book. It makes me come to the PRESENT moment and stay connected to myself. I find inner peace right there. Then I ask myself-How am I feeling? I write down my feelings. Next I ask myself-What Do I want to accomplish TODAY? I write down everything that I want to accomplish. It helps me clear the clutter of negative emotions and focus on the task on hand with logical thinking. That way I get to complete the daily tasks easily, quickly and with inner peace.
